Weddings at Checkerspot

Up to 500 for a full buyout · smaller receptions upstairs

Book your event

Some people want the ballroom — the chandeliers, the carpet, the chicken or the fish. If that is the wedding you are picturing, we are cheerfully not it.

What we are is a working brewery in South Baltimore with a room that opens up to five hundred, a real stage, and beer made about fifty feet from where your guests will be drinking it. A reception that looks like the two of you, rather than like everybody else's.

The room

When you take the building, you take the building. The main taproom opens out into one space that carries five hundred, with a private bartender for your guests and an hour beforehand to set up, decorate, and persuade the seating chart to behave. The copper tanks sit lit behind glass along one side, which does more for a room than most centrepieces manage.

Speeches, first dances, and the slideshow

There is a real stage here, not a corner cleared for a band, and two projectors. A live band, a DJ, a best man who has prepared far too much, a photo montage set to something that gets everybody — the room is already wired for all of it.

Food, and what is on tap

Our kitchen sends food out to the room, and preferred caterers are available when the day calls for more than that. Every beer is brewed here in small batches and all of it is gluten-reduced, which quietly settles a question you would otherwise be chasing around the RSVP list.

Rehearsal dinners and the morning after

Plenty of couples book us for one of the smaller pieces rather than the reception itself — a rehearsal dinner the night before, or a brunch the day after while everyone is still in town and nobody wants a production. Those go upstairs in the semi-private mezzanine, twenty to a hundred and fifty.

Talking to us early

Wedding dates go a long way out and Saturdays go first. If you have a season in mind it is worth getting in touch even if nothing else is settled — there is no obligation in a conversation.

Questions

Before you get in touch

When should we start talking to you?
Earlier than feels necessary. Wedding dates book a long way ahead and Saturdays go first.
How many people can you hold?
Up to five hundred with the whole building. Smaller receptions, rehearsal dinners and day-after brunches fit the semi-private mezzanine upstairs, at twenty to a hundred and fifty.
Is there a stage and AV?
Yes — a real stage and two projectors, for the band or the DJ, the speeches, and the slideshow.
Can we bring our own caterer?
Preferred caterers are available and our kitchen sends food out to the room. What fits depends on the day, so it is a conversation rather than a fixed list.
Can we decorate?
Yes, and every booking includes an hour beforehand to do it before anyone arrives.
Do you do rehearsal dinners?
Yes, usually upstairs in the mezzanine — semi-private, and the right size for it.
